How does Botox work?

Botox is an injectable medication created from a neurotoxin called Clostridium botulinum. Part of a class of injectable treatments called neuromodulators, Botox works by changing the way treated muscle tissues function. 

Many people believe that Botox “freezes” treated muscles. In reality, the treatment temporarily prevents those muscles from going through their normal range of motion. You’ll still be able to create normal facial expressions, but the treated muscles won’t be strong enough to pull and tug your skin into lines, folds, and wrinkles. 

Botox is FDA-approved for temporarily reducing the appearance of crow’s feet, forehead lines, and frown lines. Practitioners often use Botox off-label to create effects in other areas of the face.

It takes 1-2 days for your results to develop. You can expect those results to last around four months. As you near the end of that timeframe, expect to see your lines and wrinkles slowly returning.
